Week 7
Fixing the eyes:
Continue fixing the eyes with even more keyframes...
Retargeting the mouth:
I was really surprised about how well the mouth retargeting went. It's night and day compared to the eyes retargeting. of course, it's not perfect, but I would say it's 80 percent there, for the FIRST PASS!! Can't express how happy I was when looking at it.
Some problems still need to be fixed like:
Pose holding around frame 214-227
Pose refine for frame 264 & 430
Regarding last week's progress, Dr. Kennedy said it was kinda weird for the eyes to retarget this bad as he thought the tracking in Analyzer was not perfect of course yet still acceptable. He recommends ensuring consistency between poses to minimize random behaviors. But if that doesn't work, it would be smart to move on and clean up the eyes later on.
As for this week's feedback, he was pretty satisfied with what I've got for now. However, he did mention to be careful with some of the mouth shapes. For example, the lip corners for frame 376 should push a bit inwards using the mouth corner controls. which better resembles the pose in the reference footage.
I was really happy with what I've got currently but I would use the term break to better refine it. I'm fine with the brows for now, the real problem was still the eyes. I would dedicate more time into fixing that during the term break, see if I can minimize the jitters and random movements with more keyframes. As for the mouth, I should be able to fix majority of the issues rather quickly.
Overall, the first semester of the mocap class was kinda fun. Dr. Kennedy was really professional with this subject and he helped pinpoints what can be improved WEEKLY, which really motivated me to push forward and do better with this project. I won't say I'm super happy with the whole process, I much rather doing keyframe animations. However, the feeling of accomplishment when I see the decent mouth retargeting for the first pass was so great. It do feels like the work I did in Analyzer got paid off. Can't say the same for the eyes retargeting though....
